“I think of it as a cartoon makeover,” says Doug. “When done right, a caricature makes a person feel good about themselves. It’s a leap of faith to pose, so I work hard to deserve people’s trust.” Doug doesn’t require subjects to hold still, they can freely engage with the hosts of the booth. Building trust, engaging people on a personal level —no wonder Doug’s so popular at trade shows.

It was a busy night, as usual, with a nonstop lineup of eager subjects.

Live Digital Caricature comes to Atlanta

Posted Mar 1st, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Televox brought the artist to HiMSS, a mammoth trade show for health care IT professionals. What do I mean by mammoth? It took 15 minutes just to get out of the convention hall at the end of the day. Interest in my caricatures grew each day at this show, so that by day three, demand was such that I was inspired to achieve a pace of 5 and 1/2 minutes per person over the course of the day.  Televox springs for badge holder/lanyards, so people can wear the caricatures all over the show as kind of advertising, which I think is pretty smart. When I arrived back at SFO at midnight, I crossed paths with a guy who turned out to be one of my 58 caricatures that day. Small world. Caricature subjects can get their jpegs at the downloads page link in the menu above.

These caricatures averaged 7 minutes apiece, a nice pace for drawing all day!

Ameritrade, the online brokerage, hosts a big conference annually for financial planners, and Scout Funds is a regular exhibitor. With all the conference sessions they offer, the exhibit hall is only trafficked for a few hours a day, and it is essential that attendees be aware of an exhibitor’s presence. Toward that end, Scout employs me in their booth, where my live digital caricatures are a unique draw. On the left are a fun group of happy faces, and on the right, a shot of the crowd of attendees applauding the gentleman who bid $15,000 for the chairs the keynote speakers sat on, (two retirees named Bill and W). The proceeds went to Haitian relief. :) See all caricatures at the download page in the menu above.

The artist was invited to an internal event for the insurance giant, Allianz, held in chilly Minneapolis. The guests had never seen live digital caricature and they were very enthusiastic. The gentleman with the spiked hair was the last subject of the evening, and I took off the gloves for him. luckily for me he rolled with the punch!

Melles Griot asked the artist to provide a little levity at their Moscone hall booth for this optics and laser trade show. The reception was warm, with plenty of smiling subjects happy to stop and have their digital caricature done, and ultimately to get to know the CVI folks a little better . These two were some of my favorite faces. The woman holding her cell is demonstrating her caricature in three mediums: on screen, as a 4X6″ photo print, and on her facebook page. How cool is that!

The artist was invited to entertain Google employees at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, needless to say, a big affair. There were lots of couples—glad to see that engineers can actually get dates—and the host provided these neat frames. I was too swamped to take much in the way of pictures, but fortunately I snagged these terrific couples. These photos  illustratemy basic philosophy of caricature: capture the beauty of the women and rake the guys across the coals. Scout Funds is regular client, and a favorite of the artist. The convention was for financial planners, a notoriously serious society, so bringing a little levity to the San Diego convention center was a strategically smart move for Scout. These averaged about five to six minutes apiece. Digital caricatures make great social networking avatars–I wonder how many of these will show up on facebook? BTW, the caricature of the cute redhead below may very well be my personal best. You can view all of them at the downloads link in the menu bar above.

There were lots of kids in attendance, many of whom sprawled out across a big rug to watch the caricatures unfold on the 50″ lcd in the lobby where I was working. I also booked two traditional media caricaturists, Zach Trenholm and Laura Gilmore to provide plenty of cartoon entertainment for the event. When the artist booked this conference, never having heard the name Allianz before, he didn’t realize his client is the biggest insurance company in the world. Well, we made a big impact at this convention for financial planners, which was attended by families as well. This show was a first for the artist in two ways: first caricature of a penguin, and first caricature of Jay Leno. (OK, he claims he isn’t but I noticed a couple bugs on his teeth, so I know he rode in on his motorcycle that morning.) See Jay, the penguin, and all the rest of my live digital caricature subjects from this two day, four hour sessions booking, at the downloads link on the menu bar above. As you can see from these pictures, Allison wasn’t exaggerating. Live digital caricature was a popular draw at this Boston convention. This is a monster trade show for orthodontists and Televox, a provider of phone and web services for the industry, hired this artist to help bring some buzz and levity to their booth space for three days. The traffic was heavy and the line was seldom less than ten deep, so I never got much rest, but I’m not complaining. I really enjoyed the Televox sales staff and working with the big screen display they provided. These caricatures averaged about 6 minutes each, and are available for download at the Televox site.

The planners of this convention, held at Moscone West, thought my live digital caricatures would help draw traffic in a common area. and help create some community among the convention attendees. They helped that goal with a placard advertising the artist at the entrance of the show, as well as a huge board displaying blow up caricatures of the MRS “celebrities” at the show, done in advance from photos. I took a photo of my setup in the calm before the storm. The screen measures 60″ diagonal, big enough so a crowd can watch me draw, and that’s what happened. The photo showing a bunch of people in line with a gorgeous young lady sitting at my screen is what I found after returning from a 15 minute break—my only one of the day. This live digital caricature artist was delighted to entertain at one of the premier events on the San Francisco scene. The Academy of Friends Gala is an annual Aids fundraiser where they pull out all the stops. FIJI Water, one of the sponsers of the event,  had me drawing digital caricatures of the guests. The gentleman with the red shades  was my first and favorite face of the evening.

Convention / Moscone San Francisco

digital-caricature-san-francisco-moscone-001digital-caricature-san-francisco-moscone-002 Live digital caricature  was a big hit at this trade show for school administrators. Moscone Hall in San Francisco was a perfect venue for live digital caricature to be used as a booth attraction. Workforce Software garnered quite a lot of trade  show at this  convention. They give out lanyard cases for each caricature print so that my caricature subjects are walking advertisements for Workforce.  Convention traffic was lighter than last year overall but we weren’t at all lonely with attendees lining up for their live digital caricatures.

Tradeshow / World Ag Expo

Alltech has had me drawing caricatures for their customers for four years running at The World Ag Expo, a kind of Disneyland for Aggies. This year they affixed my digital caricatures onto T-shirts for a unique and personal giveaway. As you can see in the slideshow, I prepared a number of body templates with different themes in advance. Unlike most clients, Alltech isn’t using me so much as a booth draw, but more as a thank you for their customers. One more way my digital caricatures can make attending a convention a personal experience.

UMB Scout Funds invited to me to draw live digital caricatures for attendees of the Ameritrade Conference in Las Vegas this year. Here are several of my favorite subjects of the trade show. These caricatures averaged 6 minutes each.  The two gentleman in one picture are twins, fortunately not identical. In the wide shot below, you can see the sort of traffic we drew at this convention, even during relatively slow periods. As booth attractions go, live digital caricature is both a novel idea nad a compelling way to get personal with prospective clients. Bottom line is that no attendee could have gone home from this Las Vegas convention without knowing about UMB Scout Funds.

Corporate Event / San Diego

san-diego-rooftop-caricature-sampleman-standing-next-to-screen1 I drew live digital caricatures on the roof level, with the night skyline of San Diego as a backdrop for this event. It was held for the same group of retailers and marketers hosted by Storepoint, held at a downtown San Diego night club. One of the advantages of live digital caricature is its adaptability to different venues. A club setting is great for caricatures. The lady in closeup is holding her iphone, from which she downloaded her caricature done the night before. Pretty cool. san-diego-caricature This  caricature artist  was invited to San Diego where Storepoint was hosting a group of retailers at the famous Del Coronado.  Although this is a kind of tradeshow I was hired to draw live digital caricatures  as entertainment at after hours events. San Diego is balmy year round, but I didn’t expect to be drawing on the beach!   Attendees  lined up happily on the white sand for a chance to be drawn using this high tech setup. It was great fun with Beachboys classics to draw by.  Check out the size of that caricature on the screen! Subjects can download digital versions of their caricatures here.

Holiday Party / Woodside

The Harmans  hire this artist to draw  live digital caricatures for the kids and teens—along with the occasional Santa— every year at their huge, amazing gathering of family and friends  in Woodside.  As holiday party  entertainment goes,  digital caricature isn’t exactly traditional but that’s part of the charm. Subjects can download jpegs of their caricatures at this link.
